Liver Disease and Transplantation
More than 1,700 liver transplants have been performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Over the last five years, we have performed 549 liver transplants including 72 living donor liver transplants, making us one of the largest liver transplant programs in the country. In 2015, we performed 85 liver transplants, including 8 adult living donor liver transplants. Our results overall are excellent and compare favorably with local, regional and national statistics.
The liver disease and transplant program at Northwestern’s Kovler Organ Transplantation Center offers a complete range of medical and surgical interventions to treat patients with complex liver disorders, including liver disease management, end-stage disease treatment and liver transplantation.
We have been recognized for our success with new immunosuppressant agents that help reduce post-transplant complications and are one of the few hospitals in the Midwest to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic resections of liver tumors and laparoscopic procedures in patients with cirrhosis. Additionally, we were one of the first hospitals in Chicago with a dedicated liver cancer clinic.
The Kovler Organ Transplantation Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital offers comprehensive, compassionate care throughout the transplant process. Our transplantation programs include:
